Summer is not the most popular time of year to go on a safari in Africa, but that is part of the appeal. With the parks and private reserves being a little quieter than usual, those wanting to have a slower and more laidback experience will find that travelling during the African summer is going to be one of the best holidays they have ever had.
The most popular time of the year to go on a safari is between the months of June and September. These months are cool and dry, making the experience a pleasant one, full of sightings. But the honest truth is that while we’d all like to travel at the best time of year, sometimes the only time we can go on holiday is when we can get time off, which in some cases could end up being right in the middle of the Southern Hemisphere’s summer.
Although many travel guides and blogs will try to convince you that travelling during summer is going to be unpleasant, it can actually be quite magical. Not only are the days longer, but the evenings often end with a spectacular thunderstorm, which puts on quite the unforgettable show. The days might be hot and humid, but they are not unbearable, and there are many ways that you can stay cool throughout your stay.
- Choose the right sort of accommodation
Air conditioning and a swimming pool are vital for staying cool during the African summer. The heat and humidity can get quite intense early on in the day and between 12pm and 15pm it is hot enough to want to be sitting in the pool or snoozing in an air conditioned room. At Toro Yaka, our rooms are designed to be comfortable and we have a stunning swimming pool which looks out over the bush.
- Wear sunscreen
Even when travelling during the winter months, you are encouraged to bring along a good quality SPF, to keep your skin protected. While in the winter you can get away with wearing an SPF 30, during the height of summer you should consider using an SPF 50. Because you will be sweating and swimming, you should reapply your SPF every 2 hours.
- Stay cool with ice blocks
Dehydration can sneak up on you. Making sure that you have enough water, and keeping it chilled with ice blocks, will keep you hydrated and cooled off. The ice blocks are also great for sucking on when you just can’t face another glass of water.
- Soak your hat in water
When out in the safari, one way to stay cool is to soak your hat in water. This will help to keep the heat at bay during the hotter parts of the day and as such it will reduce your chance of suffering from heat stroke.
- Dress in light clothing
This one is fairly self-explanatory. Wearing breathable clothing, in lighter colours will have you feeling comfortable throughout your summer safari African holiday.
